PFS Competition
The Institute for Child Success is excited to offer two opportunities to jurisdictions interested in improving outcomes for children and bringing new resources to early childhood programs. The competition is now open for technical assistance to help jurisdictions move from interest in Pay for Success to implementation. Three to five jurisdictions will be selected to receive technical assistance over 9-12 months from the Institute for Child Success. Service providers in one (or more) of those jurisdictions will also receive capacity building training and assistance from the Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF). Artist in Residence
The Institute for Child Success, in partnership with AIR Serenbe, the artist in residence program at Serenbe, is excited to announce a new initiative focused on leveraging the arts to foster the success of all young children and their families. This new partnership will take the form of an extended residency for an artist in any discipline making work for young children. AIR Serenbe is pleased to partner with ICS to provide artists making work for young children time and space to create, and to think with ICS staff and friends about the role that the arts can play in supporting the success of young children and their families. ICS believes that the arts can help us unwind the entrenched cultural narratives that undermine child success and well-being, while also actively shaping alternative cultural narratives and norms that support child success.

We are excited that our first artist, Anis Mojgani, a poet, illustrator, and spoken word performer, will take up residence at Serenbe on January 29th. During his residency, Anis will be working on a new book of poetry and illustration for young children. ICS Staff Updates
Keller Anne Ruble
Keller Anne Ruble joined ICS in November 2015 as an Associate for Policy and Research. A South Carolina native, Keller Anne graduated with a B.A. In History from Clemson University in 2011. She then taught middle school science in the Achievement School  District of Tennessee with Teach for America, leading her to pursue her Masters in Urban Education Policy from Brown University, a program deeply rooted in educational equity. While at Brown, Keller Anne interned for Rhode Island Kids Count, a data-based policy and advocacy organization supported by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Keller Anne comes to ICS profoundly committed to broad-based, systems-level change that will support the success of all young children.

In other staff news, Katy Sides is being promoted to Vice President, Operations and Finance.  Katy is being promoted as a result of her outstanding contributions to ICS during her time on staff. In this new role, Katy will be responsible for overseeing all finance, operations, development, and compliance functions of the Institute.

Also, Joe Waters is being promoted to Executive Vice President.  Joe will continue to be responsible for guiding all of the Institute’s research and policy programs, and strategic initiatives.
ICS Awarded John I. Smith Grant for “Catalyzing Knowledge”
ICS was recently awarded a $50,000 grant from John I. Smith Charities, Inc. to support the work ICS is undertaking to catalyze new knowledge to advance child success. This initiative includes both our policy research publications and knowledge development convenings that enable ICS to challenge stakeholders in developing innovative and entrepreneurial methods for ensuring positive impact for children. We are extremely grateful for this grant.
Clare Huntington, JD Discussion
ICS closed out its 2015 Speaker Series by welcoming Clare Huntington, JD of Fordham University to Greenville. Professor Huntington presented an engaging discussion of her book,Failure to Flourish: How Law Undermines Family Relationships. Central to her thesis is that the current legal system must be honed to better serve the many iterations of family we experience in society today. Professor Huntington also stressed the importance of the role of the father in the lives of children. Following Professor Huntington’s presentation, participants asked many important questions including which countries, states, and municipalities might be looked at in terms of implementing her recommendations. Other questions explored what citizens might do to move this important conversation forward.
